Modern terminal application for command-line tools and shells, such as Command Prompt, PowerShell and WSL, which features a tabbed layout, GPU acceleration and extensive customization options
What's new in Windows Terminal 1.10.2714.0:
- Bug Fixes:
- Accessibility:
- Resolves hang on launch for Windows Server 2022 (and similar client Windows versions) when tablet input keyboard is activated (#11312)
The new Windows Terminal is now available officially 1.0. But as a power user (that’s why you use Terminal, right?), you might want to open it in any context with just a few keystrokes. I myself use to press Windows R, then type cmd, enter to open the good old Command Prompt. I want the same thing to open Windows Terminal. Change Directory. What it does: This command will change the directory that you're currently working with in the Terminal in order to execute other commands on a different. After opening the Start menu, type this on your keyboard to search the menu items. Command Prompt will show up as the top result. Alternatively, you can manually find Command Prompt on the Start menu. Command Prompt is in the Windows System folder on Windows 10 & 8, and in the Accessories folder under All Programs on Windows 7, Vista & XP.
With the aim of making Windows a more popular platform for developers, Microsoft introduced WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) in Windows 10, which made it possible to run Linux binaries on Windows without the hassle of a virtual machine.
To streamline things further, and provide an alternative to the outdated Windows Console, Microsoft came up with Windows Terminal. It aims to change how users access Command Prompt, PowerShell, WSL and other command-line shells and apps. You'll be able to use all these tools from a single application, which supports multiple tabs, GPU acceleration, and quite a bit of customization.
A new tool for developers
For a long time, the command-line environment available on Windows has been inferior to those on macOS and Linux. Microsoft has taken some steps to improve their console over the years, but they've finally decided to just develop a new application, called Windows Terminal.
This new tool will not replace the existing console, which would cause endless compatibility issues with older apps. Instead, you'll be able to run Command Prompt, PowerShell and WSL instances in separate tabs, within the new Terminal.
Modern features for a modern terminal
The most important of these is, of course, multiple tab support. This was the most requested feature by far, which is hardly surprising. Every new tab will be connected to a specific shell or app, and they can even be opened with hotkeys.
Secondly, Windows Terminal uses a GPU accelerated DirectWrite/DirectX engine for rendering text. This means that all kinds of graphics and symbols can now be displayed within the terminal.
Customization is a bit tricky at the moment
To change key bindings, UI colors, backgrounds, as well as add new shells, you currently have to edit a JSON profile file in a text editor. While this isn't too difficult, especially for developers, it's clearly a temporary solution until a more intuitive method is implemented.
Worth trying out
Windows Terminal should be a real game-changer. It makes much easier to work with command-line tools from Windows, thus increasing the platform's appeal for developers. There is still a lot of work to be done, but this project shows a great deal of promise.

The Windows Terminal is free and in the Windows Store and you should go make sure you have the latest update. Permute 3 4 4 equals. The v0.10 is out and it's got a number of lovely quality of life improvements, not the least of which is Mouse Support!
Mouse Support
What's that mean, doesn't it already support mice? This means Text-Mode mouse support. So your apps like tmux and Midnight Commander can receive and react to mouse events, event when you're ssh'ed in remotely! That's because it's using VT (virtual terminal) textual commands under the covers.
Mouse Support for text mode is super useful if you use apps like Midnight Commander under Linux, or if you split plans with tmux.
Split Pane
You can change Windows Terminal in any way with themes, colors, gifs, key bindings and more. Many of you use screen or tmux under Linux and you can and should do that.
Terminal also supports splitting natively and for any shell (remember terminal != console != shell) and they just added a lovely splitMode=duplicate that makes a copy of the shell/profile in focus.
NOTE: You might consider starting with a fresh profile if yours is getting out of control.
Here's my whole keybindings section right now, including the part above.
So I can split with ctrl+shift+d and get a copy of whatever is in front. I can use ctrl+| to get my default terminal, and I can use ctrl+shift+w to close the pane in focus, while ctrl+w close the current tab. Yummy.
